Question: How do leaders affect Employee Engagement?

A brand new blog I am starting today, poses that question and hopefully stimulates an ongoing discussion into the role of leaders in motivating and engaging employees.

Are your leaders engaged?

Let's talk.

The 5 main engagement drivers are:

1.Senior management sincerely interested in employee well-being.
2.Improvement of my skills.
3.Organization’s reputation for social responsibility.
4.Input into decision making in my department.
5.Organization quickly resolves customer concerns.

Some of the others:

? Have excellent career advancement opportunities.
? Enjoy challenging work assignments.
? Organization encourages innovative thinking.

Your thoughts?

During this economic downturn are your employees more or less restive? A recent SHRM survey (2009) found that, for the second consecutive year, employees were most concerned about job security. No surprise you might say? But no reason for complacency I would suggest.

Another, more recent survey reported that 60% of employees surveyed will be looking for jobs as the major economies rise out of this downturn.

In addition, the 2008 Towers Perrin report titled Closing the Engagement Gap..." reports that only one out of every five workers is giving full discretionary effort on the job (the definition most accepted for employee engagement) and that this "engagement gap" poses serious risks for employers because of the strong connection between employee engagement and company financial performance.

More to come…
